Warm Up Your Living Room Without a Renovation

You don't need new walls to change the mood. Textiles, layered light and one bold colour move go a surprisingly long way.

Start with the big picture

The fastest way to change how a room feels is to change how it's lit. Swap the single ceiling light for two or three smaller sources at different heights — a floor lamp by the reading chair, a warm table lamp on the sideboard.

Then work in layers of textile: a wool throw over the sofa arm, cushions in two textures, a curtain heavy enough to move when the window opens.

If the room still feels flat, commit to one bold move — a deep blue sofa, a terracotta armchair — and let everything else stay quiet around it.
